Here’s what to expect with kyphoplasty.
Kyphoplasty is an outpatient procedure that uses local anesthesia. Food and drink are prohibited eight hours before your appointment time.
During a kyphoplasty, you will be positioned face down on your stomach, and a local anesthetic will be administered. The physician will use real-time fluoroscopic guidance throughout the procedure. A small incision will be made in your lower back. The physician will first insert a small balloon that will be inflated to raise the collapsed vertebrae back to its original height. The space is then filled with fast-drying bone cement, which immediately stabilizes the fracture. The incision will then be closed.
Discharge instructions may vary, but because the procedure doesn’t require any stitches, sutures, or staples, most patients can return to regular activity the following day.
