Here’s what to expect with basivertebral nerve ablation (The Intracept Procedure).
The procedure is typically done in an Ambulatory Surgery Center, with the patient going home later the same day. The Surgery Center will confirm your arrival time as well as pre op instructions.
During the Intracept procedure, your physician will make a small incision in your lower back to access the affected vertebrae. Radiofrequency energy will be used to prevent the basivertebral nerve within that vertebrae from continuing to transmit pain signals. This step may be repeated in several vertebrae.
The procedure will take approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete.
It may take up to 72 hours for the steroid to take effect. Therefore, your pain may return after the local anesthetic wears off.
