Basivertebral Nerve Ablation (The Intracept Procedure)

Basivertebral Nerve Ablation

The Intracept Procedure

The Intracept procedure targets the basivertebral nerve, which is the key nerve that transmits pain signals from the discs in the spine. The procedure uses radiofrequency ablation to deactivate the nerve permanently to help with low back pain.

The Intracept Procedure is an effective treatment option for:

  • Chronic low back pain
  • Lumbar degenerative disc disease

Benefits of The Intracept Procedure:

  • Provides significant pain relief and improved function and mobility long term.
  • Minimally invasive, outpatient procedure.
  • Does not alter the structure of the spine or require any implants.
  • Effective option for patients who have not responded to other therapies

What To Expect

Here’s what to expect with basivertebral nerve ablation (The Intracept Procedure).

Preparation

The procedure is typically done in an Ambulatory Surgery Center, with the patient going home later the same day. The Surgery Center will confirm your arrival time as well as pre op instructions.

Treatment

During the Intracept procedure, your physician will make a small incision in your lower back to access the affected vertebrae. Radiofrequency energy will be used to prevent the basivertebral nerve within that vertebrae from continuing to transmit pain signals. This step may be repeated in several vertebrae.

The procedure will take approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete.

Recovery

It may take up to 72 hours for the steroid to take effect. Therefore, your pain may return after the local anesthetic wears off.

  • If you received IV sedation with the procedure, your reasoning, coordination, and reflexes are decreased. Therefore:
    • You must not operate a vehicle or use machinery/appliances for 24 hours.
    • Avoid making critical decisions for 24 hours.
    • No alcoholic beverages for 24 hours.
  • Do not shower for 24 hours, or bathe or swim for 48 hours.
  • You may return to your normal diet.
  • You may resume all your normal medications.
  • Keep dressing dry and intact for 24 hours.
  • You may experience soreness in your back for up to 7 days. You will have a post-operative appointment 2 weeks after surgery.
